RACING
A number of members in the club take part in racing events across the year in a range of disciplines, the committee members are available to offer any advice or information you might need. We are affiliated with both British Cycling and Cycling Time Trials (CTT).
We compete in Time Trial (CTT), Criteriums (BC), Road Races (BC) and BUCS events.
The Racing team is open to anyone, from the seasoned racer to anyone who is willing to give it a go!
Opportunities in Manchester
There are plenty of opportunities in Manchester for trying out and getting involved in different racing events with circuit races being held on closed circuits at Tameside, and road races and time trials in the surrounding areas.
We aim to run race skill sessions from September to January for new riders who want to prepare for racing. Completing skill sessions before racing is highly advisable as you will learn essential bike handling skills which will help you stay safe on the bike when racing in close proximity to other riders.
Annually, there is an inter-university sports tournament between Leeds, Liverpool and Manchester - The Christie Cup. Cycling is being added into the roster of events with the possibility for time trials, hill climbs and mountain bike races. This event will be completely inclusive, giving all members within the club an opportunity to tryout racing.
British Universities & College Sports (BUCS)
Throughout the year there are multiple BUCS events, in which points are awarded to the top 4 placings. To be entered into these events, you must attend the selection sessions, as we are only able to send our top 2/3 riders. The events are:
In addition, there are BUCS Criterium (crit) races held at York Cycle Circuit, typically in April. Transport is provided to this and it is a good opportunity for those who have not raced before to experience racing on a fairly easy circuit.
Benefits
The club subsidizes race entries and transport. The opportunity to represent one of the best performing Universities in the country!
The University of Manchester CC is currently ranked #1 on British Cycling in the North West. This is a major achievement considering the caliber of riders in the Universities in this region.

- Hill Climb - This generally takes place at the end of October/beginning of November. Riders who wish to compete will be taken to a local hill selected by the road and race captain. They will be timed, with the best 2 men and women being selected. In previous years, the hill climb has taken place in Sheffield up Curbar Edge.
- Time Trials - there are 3 events of this format; 10-mile, 25-mile and 3up Team. Riders will be selected for these events by their times recorded on a local 10-mile TT course (usually J2/1, however this is subject to the road and race captains decision), again with the best 2 men and women being selected. Up to 3 teams will be selected to compete in the 3-UP TTT.
- Road Race - Up to 2 men and women will be selected for this via application and observation of previous racing record.
In addition, there are BUCS Criterium (crit) races held at York Cycle Circuit, typically in April. Transport is provided to this and it is a good opportunity for those who have not raced before to experience racing on a fairly easy circuit.
